PEER Project, executed by BUN-CA and implemented by the UNDP with GEF funding

In June 2006 the Regional Program on Electrical Energy Efficiency in Industrial and Commercial Service Sectors in Central America (PEER) carried out two activities as part of its training component.

Training Concluded for Eco-consultants

Within the framework of the agreement between of the regional initiative GESTA, funded by the GTZ; and BUN-CA, two technical/practical workshops were conducted for training eco-consultants, entitled “Energy Efficiency in Small and Medium-sized Industries in El Salvador and Guatemala”.

Participating in the El Salvador workshop were 14 eco-consultants, including business managers and SME consultants, who visited 7 companies and prepared 7 technical reports, identifying opportunities for improving energy efficiency in refrigeration, air conditioning and lighting .

Participants, San Salvador Workshop

Under this same agreement, a hands-on training course entitled “Energy Efficiency in Small and Medium-sized Industries in Guatemala” – focusing on refrigeration and energy efficiency – was given in Guatemala City on June 7-16, 2006, with the cooperation of the national technical training agency INTECAP (Instituto Técnico de Capacitación).

Participating were nine persons, including eco-consultants, and 5 SMEs, where the practical part of the workshop was carried out.

The final output of this training consisted of 5 technical reports prepared by the eco-consultants trained in identifying opportunities for improving energy efficiency.

The closing act took place on June 16 with representatives from GESTA El Salvador, BUN-CA staff, participating consultants and the managers of the participating SMEs in attendance.

The overall objective of these two workshops was to strengthen the technical capacities of environmental service providers for identifying potential improvements in energy efficiency.  The major themes included air conditioning and lighting in El Salvadoran SMEs and refrigeration in Guatemalan SMEs, preparing and calculating measures for improving electrical energy use, and the importance of adequate management of energy efficiency systems.
